About Klondike Solitaire

Klondike Solitaire is the patience game most people simply call Solitaire: seven tableau columns, four foundations, and a stock you turn a card at a time. It is played with one shuffled 52-card deck and the goal is to build all four suits from Ace up to King.

Every deal here is a genuine random shuffle rather than a hand-picked easy layout, so not every game is winnable — that is true of real Klondike too. Draw 1 is forgiving and most deals go out; draw 3 is the traditional scoring version and considerably harder.

Undo is unlimited, the clock and move count run in the corner, and Auto-finish clears the board the moment everything is face up so you are never clicking through a won position.

How to play

  1. Build the four foundations up by suit, Ace first and King last.
  2. In the tableau, stack cards downward in alternating colours — a red 8 goes on a black 9.
  3. Only a King can be moved into an empty column.
  4. Uncovering a face-down tableau card turns it face up, which is how you open the board.
  5. Click the stock to turn cards. When it runs out, click the empty space to recycle the waste.
  6. You win when all 52 cards are on the foundations.

Tips & strategy

  • Turn a card from the stock only after you have played every move already on the board — the stock is not going anywhere.
  • Prefer the move that flips a face-down card. Cards you cannot see are the real obstacle, not cards you cannot place.
  • Do not empty a column unless you have a King ready for it. An empty column with no King is dead space.
  • Think twice before sending a low card to a foundation early — a 2 you have banked cannot come back to hold a 3 of the other colour.
  • On draw 3, count the stock. The cards you can reach change every time you recycle, so plan around which third of the pile is currently on top.

Klondike Solitaire — frequently asked questions

Is every Klondike deal winnable?

No. With a genuine random shuffle roughly 80% of draw-1 deals are theoretically solvable and far fewer of draw-3 deals. If a board is stuck, deal a new one — that is part of the game, not a bug.

What is the difference between draw 1 and draw 3?

Draw 1 turns a single card from the stock each time, so you can reach every card in it. Draw 3 turns three at once and you may only play the top one, which locks large parts of the stock behind an ordering problem.

Is my time saved?

Your fastest completed game is saved in your own browser on this device. Nothing is uploaded and there is no account.

Does this work on a phone?

Yes. Drag cards with your finger, or tap a card to send it to the best available pile without dragging.

Is this Microsoft Solitaire?

No. Klondike is a public-domain card game that predates computers by decades. This is an original implementation and is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or connected to Microsoft.
