About this tip calculator & bill splitter

Two jobs that always come up at the same time: how much to tip, and who owes what. This does both, and handles the awkward cases — rounding the total to something tidy, or splitting unevenly when one person had the expensive thing.

Tipping customs vary enormously. In the United States 15 to 20% is standard for table service; in much of Europe rounding up is normal; in Japan tipping can be considered rude. The presets here cover the common cases, and you can type any percentage.

How to use it

  1. Enter the bill total.
  2. Choose a tip percentage or type your own.
  3. Set how many people are splitting it.
  4. Optionally round the per-person amount up to a whole number.

Tip Calculator & Bill Splitter — FAQ

Should I tip on the pre-tax or post-tax amount?

Convention in the US is to tip on the pre-tax subtotal, though many people simply use the total. The difference is small; nobody will mind either way.

How much should I tip?

In the US, 15% is standard and 20% is generous for table service. In the UK 10 to 12.5% is typical and often already added as a service charge — check the bill before adding more.

Can I split unevenly?

Yes. Switch to custom split and enter what each person's share of the bill was; the tip is then divided in proportion.
