Minesweeper Patterns Every Player Should Know
Minesweeper only looks like luck. Learn five patterns and roughly nine out of ten squares on any board become forced moves you can prove.
New Minesweeper players think the game is about guessing. Experienced players know it is about pattern recognition, and that a well-played board only requires a genuine guess two or three times.
Here are the patterns that do the heavy lifting.
First, the one rule everything derives from
A number tells you how many mines are in the eight squares touching it. That is it. Every technique below is just that rule applied to two numbers at once.
The 1-1 pattern
Two 1s sitting side by side against an unopened edge. If the left 1 already has its mine accounted for by a square that the right 1 also touches, then every other square the right 1 touches is safe.
In practice: when two adjacent 1s share the same two candidate squares, and one of them touches a third square the other does not, that third square is safe.
The 1-2-1 pattern
This is the single most valuable pattern in the game. Three numbers in a row reading 1, 2, 1 along a wall of unopened squares means the mines are under the two 1s, and the square under the 2 is safe.
It feels backwards the first few times. The logic: the 2 needs two mines among three squares, and each 1 needs exactly one. The only arrangement satisfying all three constraints puts mines at the outer positions.
The 1-2-2-1 pattern
Four numbers reading 1, 2, 2, 1 along an edge. The mines sit under the two 2s, and the squares under the 1s are safe — the exact mirror of 1-2-1.
Together, 1-2-1 and 1-2-2-1 will resolve a large fraction of any Intermediate or Expert board's edges.
Chording: the biggest speed gain
If a number already has exactly that many flags around it, every remaining unopened neighbour is safe. Clicking both mouse buttons on the number opens all of them at once.
Chording is not a new deduction — you could open those squares one at a time — but it turns three or four clicks into one, and on Expert that is the difference between a two-minute solve and a five-minute one. On mobile, a double tap on a satisfied number usually does the same thing.
The counting trick for the endgame
Late in a board you often reach a position where local patterns cannot decide between two arrangements. Before you guess, count.
Total mines minus flags placed tells you how many are left. If eight unopened squares remain and only one mine is unaccounted for, the odds on any given square are far better than they look — and sometimes the count proves a region is entirely safe because all remaining mines must live somewhere else.
This is the technique that separates players who finish Expert boards from players who lose them on the last four squares.
When you genuinely must guess
It happens. Two arrangements are equally consistent with every clue on the board and no amount of counting distinguishes them. When that occurs:
- Guess in the corner or against an edge — those squares have fewer neighbours, so a wrong guess gives you less information but a right one constrains more.
- Guess in the region with the lowest local mine density.
- Guess early rather than late. A guess at move ten costs you little; a guess at move two hundred costs you the whole board.
Practise on the right difficulty
Beginner boards are too small to contain most of these patterns. Intermediate is where 1-2-1 starts appearing regularly, and Expert is where chording becomes essential rather than optional.
Open Minesweeper on Intermediate and play ten boards where you refuse to click anything you cannot prove. You will lose a few to forced guesses, and you will learn the patterns permanently.
